Five years.

Five years, which does not sound like a particularly long period for much senior teachers. Some of them have been in the field for ten, fifteen, twenty years. I know a few who have recently retired. They should have around thirty to thirty five years of teaching experience under their belt, I would think.

Five years, which to those who have recently entered service, may feel like they would soon come the same mark without so much as a blink of the eyes. I'd started to think of retiring in my second year of teaching, come to think of it. The staff and teachers at my school used to joke about it.

Five years, which to those who have perhaps recently graduated and are currently waiting to be posted (I must say I have no idea of the current situation. Are there any of you out there who are?) may seem like an eternity. After all, it took slightly more than five years (six for me) for you to have completed your studies in the training institutes. And now that you're waiting to be posted, which feels like it will never happen, you cannot possibly imagine what it would feel like to have been in the field for five years.

And five years to me, which in a strange but real and relatable way that time works for everyone seemed to have passed so swiftly that I cannot see it go by without trying but also feels like a long, long time. To be exact, it is roughly equivalent to one fifth of my entire life.

January 16th seems like it happened a long time ago. I have to actually sit down and recall what had happened on the day I reported for duty at the JPN. When I have managed to remember the details, though, I cannot help but muse at how anxious my friends and I had been. How much we had looked forward to getting posted.

Now, five years later, I wonder how many of us are still teaching. Probably more than 90%, as I have heard of a few who had decided teaching was not what they wanted to and have left to do other things. I'm sure most are married, with children and perhaps less time to spend at school.

In the five years that I have been teaching, I've also experienced a lot in terms of teaching and education. The kids who were in Year One when I came to the school are now in Year 6. Haslina and her friends went for their UPSR last year and are now in Form One in secondary school. I went to at least ten courses on KSSR, if not more. (I managed to go to KSSR courses every year, from the one for Year 2 up to Year 6). I went for a course on I-THINK, VLE Frog, LINUS and many more, all of which reflect the ever changing education system in the country. Last year, the new format for UPSR was implemented (I hope I can devote at least one post to this). This year, a revised version of KSSR for Year One started, with new textbooks, activity books and DSKP. My school was chosen to be in the Dual Language Programme which is akin to PPSMI. We were also chosen for something called the Highly Immersed Programme, which we have yet to understand what it is about but definitely know that it has something to with English.

On a much more personal tone, I also came to understand what it feels like to be under constant pressure, heavy workloads, having sleepless nights and long hours at work and also how to be on the point of giving up on everything. Alhamdulillah, I did not.

In short, a lot has happened. I'm sure you have been through a lot too. I cannot tell if people still blog or read blogs. I know many of my favourite bloggers have decided to stop blogging and turn to much easier ways of sharing such as Instagram and Facebook. I too, prefer to post on Instagram. It has occurred to me though, that one of my very few talents may lie in writing, and Instagram and Facebook and Twitter is a little limited in that sense. For one, too many people know me there. Here, most of the people who drop by have no idea who I am. And what amazes me is that the blog still manages to attract readers. There are visitors every single day.

Which brings me to this conclusion- if there is good in something, keep doing it. I cannot promise to keep writing and sharing, but I do hope whatever I have posted is still of value to some of you. I have had so many people contact me personally, asking for advice and insights. Though I was not able to be of much help, I'm glad that we all know that there is something we can learn from one another.

Let's continue to be part of that community of people who share, care and love.Sumaiyyahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00350156046641699550noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3364265967877212447.post-85598313890791902472014-01-22T01:54:00.000+08:002014-01-22T02:02:01.017+08:00KSSR Year 2 English Unit 1 (Phonics) A friend asked the other day if I've stopped blogging. I grinned sheepishly and replied that I've been too busy. Then I told her I was just being lazy.

So here I am, haha. I just came to share some materials that I made today. These worksheets were actually based on page 3 of the Year 2 English Activity Book. I just jazzed it up a bit to make it slightly more interesting and also because I wanted my pupils to write the words more than once. (You'll know what I mean if you're familiar with the exercise in the book).

I also created a similar exercise for slightly more advanced pupils. I have two or three groups in my Year 2 class this year. The pupils are so much better behaved than Haslina's class (refer to my previous posts labeled Delima diaries) and they are very good at doing their work. Some can already read most of the simple words in the textbook and they also work quite fast so I thought I might as well create a second worksheet which included sentences.

It's up to you of course, how you want to use them. The download links are below and I've provided images as a preview for your convenience (though I'm afraid the quality of the images is poor, boohoo). I've to go, hope this post and the worksheet helps you!

I'm sorry that I cannot do this consistently. I wish I could post and share what I know and have learnt as often as I can but I am either too lazy or busy doing something else. Please bear with me, dear friends. I have not even spent any time to customise my blog and it has been like this for the past two or three years. I think.

This time I would like to share a type of exercise that you can use to teach your pupils to write for Section B in Paper 2. This exercise would be useful for weak pupils and for those who are just beginning to write for Section B.

You will need to prepare the templates below for them. I shall provide the link to the PowerPoint and Word documents for the exercise so that you can download them and edit them to suit your class.

First, read through the information provided in the exercises you wish to use with your pupils. If you wish them to transfer the information first into the table/space provided, then by all means do so. Then, depending on the type of information you have, read through the sample that you have prepared. Below is one sample my mentor prepared, which I edited a bit to suit my pupils:

Since I prepared this for weak and average pupils, I made the sentences very simple. The point of this exercise is to help pupils write based on the example given. Then, provide templates with blank spaces for them to write in using the information for the two other options, such as shown below:

And there you go! Easy peasy in syaa Allah. Hope this helps!

I learnt this during a course I went to in KL. To cut things short, here is a simple way of teaching young children to create their own poems.

This method will create a five-line poem. Make sure your pupils have the basic on adjectives, nouns and verbs in the continuous tense. In order to be able to execute this well in class, you should try this out first.

First line
Write an adjective and your name. It is even better if the adjective starts with the same letter as your name.
For example: Super Sumaiyyah

Second line
Write two verbs in the continuous tense which describe the things that you like to do.
For example: Baking, reading

Third line
Write three things that you dislike. You can start off by writing just one word for each thing (a noun). Later, you can ask your pupils to write two words for each thing.
Example 1: smells, vegetables, worms
Example 2: funny smells, bitter vegetables, slimy worms

Fourth line
Write a four word sentence that describes yourself.
Example: I don't eat much.

Fifth line
Rewrite the first line of your poem.

And this is what you will get:

Super Sumaiyyah
Baking, reading
Funny smells, bitter vegetables, slimy worms
I don't eat much
Super Sumaiyyah.

Isn't it super easy and simple? I can't wait to try this out (yeah, I haven't). If you try this out, do share!

Selamat Berbuka for those of you who are fasting!

For one, my first experience of teaching KSSR involved 2 Delima and boy what a time I had! From what I understand, in a L&S class you focus on teaching your children how to actually use the language in spoken form. This was not the easiest thing to achieve with 2D as they were more interested in copying (if they were interested in the lesson at all) and creating hoavoc in the class rather than actually sit down to listen and speak in English. Don't get me wrong, I learned a lot of things from teaching them but it was NOT easy.

This year I was given the responsibility to teach one of the Year 3 classes, 3 Zamrud. At first it was not that easy either- they were much brighter and rather more disciplined (I say rather because there are quite a handful of monkeys there too! Naughty things!) and I was still unsure of how I was supposed to conduct a good listening and speaking lesson. For one, would they be interested in doing activities which does not involve any writing at all in one class? Of course you can include some written activities in an L&S class but they should not be the main focus.

How was I to teach them to speak the language and understand it? These are kampung children, mind you. Even the children whose parents are teachers watch Spongebob in Malay. (Rolls eyes in desperation). Seriously, watch Upin and Ipin in Malay as much as you like but cartoons with English audio should be viewed as so! Haiya how on earth are you going to improve your English ah! The only thing they keep saying is "Oh My English!" every time I speak more than a few sentences in English.

Then, as Emily of Newmoon would say, I got The Flash. A flash of inspiration. A simple but practical idea. My children love love love games and they are rather used to starting a class with a simple game. Every morning when I walk into class that's all they think about. "What game are we playing today? So came the The Flash.

The idea of this game (if you can call it a game) is to get children to partner up randomly and talk to each other using the dialogue or sentence structure given. Follow the steps below:

The Match-up Numbering Game

1. Teach the children a set of sentence structures according to you topic. For example:

Unit 10: A Ride in the Safari Park

Question: What animal is this?
Answer: This is a _______________.

Question: Where can you find it?
Answer: You can find it _______________.

2. Give each child one number.
Let's say there are 28 children in your class. Start a child off to say '1' and the others should follow suit.

3. Write the numbers on the board.
If there are 28 children, write 1,2,3,4 and so on up to 28.

4. Explain the rules.
The teacher will call out two numbers. The first number will ask the questions and the second number will provide the answers.

5. Have a try-out round. Call out two numbers so that the children can see how the game is played. The first number to be called will ask the questions and the second number will provide the answers.

6. Always cross out the numbers you have called out. Make sure you call out random numbers so that it will be more interesting. My children found this part fun because they could not expect the person they would be partnered up with.

And that's it! Super easy and when I think about it, not that brilliant. But it helps to keep my children in focus and they love it. At first it was awkward for some of them and I got so frustrated because one or two just would not open their mouths. But now they're used to it and we have a lot of fun in our L&S lesson. I need to get more Flashes so that we don't get bored of this game. Haha.

To my Muslim friends and readers, I hope you are spending your Ramadhan productively, in syaa Allah. Take care!Sumaiyyahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00350156046641699550noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3364265967877212447.post-4073095184974246942013-07-16T21:41:00.000+08:002013-07-26T20:39:46.662+08:00Happy Ramadhan!

I'm late! Again. Haha. Let me say it anyway- Have a blessed Ramadhan everyone! This month is the time to train ourselves to be better Muslims and individuals. If you are a Muslim, fasting, performing your prayers (both fareedah and sunnah), giving sadaqah... all those things have to be given extra work and effort! Ramadhan is our training ground. It will help prepare us for what we need to face after Ramadhan in syaa Allah.

This year marks my second year as a working lady (ewahh kelas gitu bunyi). I am getting more and more work and tasks at school, and it doesn't help that I feel so exhausted and tired all the time. Sometimes I get frustrated because I get caught up with so much clerical work that my pupils are left to fend for themselves. It truly irritates and frustrates me.

To be honest, I was afraid that when Ramadhan came, I would feel even more burdened. Normally, I always get hungry all the time as I spend most of it running here and there, from my classes to the office to the staff room, upstairs and downstairs, from one building to another. I would feel drained so if I have time I will run to the canteen or at least suck on a lollipop (of which I have an endless stock- my pupils make sure of that!). I wondered how I would get through Ramadhan without eating or drinking anything throughout the day.

Allah truly knows best. I have never felt as strong and energetic as I have during these past seven days. Now that the Mid-Year Exam is over and done with, we have started using a new timetable (Jadual Anjal). We have also split the Year 6 classes from two into three groups. This means more teaching periods, which sums up to around 34 periods for me per week. I know that for some people this is normal but at my school the normal teaching periods per week is 25. Added to that are tuition classes, endless filing and clerical work, helping a teacher with his or her course assignments (doing it for them actually -_-) and so on. You name it. Sometimes I have so much work to do that I feel my head would explode. Sometimes I get so bewildered that I would just sit down and stare at all the mess on my table. Sometimes I just don't know what I should start working on.

What worried me the most is that all this additional work would take away my focus away from my real job- to teach my pupils. Alhamdulillah. Allah has granted me the strength and energy, so far, to still be able to plan my lessons and teach in class. I used to get a bit tardy sometimes. I'd go into my classes without a single plan in my head and just teach spontaneously. I notice that the past seven days of fasting has helped me to be more serious in planning my work. It helps that we get up so early for sahur. I now set off for school at 6.00 a.m. so that I'll arrive at school at around 6.45 a.m. I have early morning classes with my Year 6 pupils. After school I'll continue with tuition classes, twice a week during school days and probably once during the weekend.

Today, for instance, I had to teach for eight periods. Just imagine. We only have ten periods per day. I only had two periods to sit and do other work. When I entered my last English class, I thought I would collapse. But I didn't. To my surprise my voice has grown stronger (if you read my posts on my first year of posting you would understand how much this means to me) and I can still jump around and have fun with my children. Ma syaa Allah. The power of fasting. The beauty of Ramadhan. Allah truly knows what he has in store for us in this blessed Ramadhan.

So dear friends. Take the opportunity to be even more productive this month. If you ever need any ideas or tips to plan better and become more productive especially during Ramadhan, do visit productivemuslim.com. It's a wonderful, wonderful website. On that note, I must end here. Sorry if it all sounds rather abrupt. I wish you a happy and blessed Ramadhan. In syaa Allah, let us be become better Muslims, people and teachers throughout this training process. Take care!
That is, in three years time. There are still three batches of pupils who must go through UPSR and fortunately(?) I am lucky enough to have been selected to teach Year 6 this year. Yayyy!! (pumps hand into the air while trying very hard to ignore how much it's shaking).

Alhamdulillah, I've been blessed with the fact that my mentor in school (who also happens to be the PK HEM) is an expert on UPSR answering techniques for English. He has traveled quite extensively around Gua Musang to give talks to pupils and teachers alike, and from what I've seen (I've had the privilege of accompanying him once or twice) the teachers and pupils all like his method as it helps them to have a system for answering the questions.

A day or two before, a friend asked if I could share some tips on how to teach pupils to answer Section A of Paper 2. I must tell you that I don't know much myself, but I have learned from a person I consider to be an expert on this matter. Insya-Allah, I hope to share what I've learnt from him with you in this blog, together with a few tips and tricks that I've managed to come up with as I teach my pupils. I hope this will help and benefit you! All the best!

NOTE: Please remember that different teachers will have different strategies or answering techniques. This is what my mentor taught me, and he has managed to help many pupils succeed in scoring for the exam, so I take that as a good sign.

Introduction
There are 3 sections in Paper 2. The first is Section A for which pupils must produce five sentences based on the picture given. For example, for the picture below, pupils can compose the five following sentences:

3. The man who wears a collared-shirt is looking at some badminton rackets in the display area.
4. The woman who sports shoulder-length hair is looking at the baby in the pram while another woman who wears a head scarf is holding the handle of the pram.
5. The girl who wears a t-shirt and a pair of trousers is showing a doll to a man.
3. A man is looking at the badminton rackets.
4. A/Another man is reading a newspaper.
5. A girl is holding a doll.

There are many other possible answers or sentences that may be produced, but the ones I've provided are examples to help you see the possible sentence structures for the picture. Weak students may not be able to produce such sentences, so other options need to be explored. I shall provide step-by-step instructions that will help you to help your pupils to prepare themselves for answering Section A. I have decided to separate the steps into different posts so that it is easier for you to follow and understand them. (It also helps me prepare blog entries more easily as a long post would take a very long time to be composed.)
The start of a new year is always action-packed, whether you're at school or in university or at school again, as a teacher.

This year I've been assigned quite a share of responsibilities and duties at school. To be completely honest with you, I'm not quite sure I'll be able to pull it off but I will give it m very best shot and try to accomplish whatever there is to be accomplished. For now, I shall have to put any notion of continuing my studies aside just a teeny tiny wee bit. Just so I can see if I can manage well at school. I f I can, then Insya-Allah I shall do my best to go for my M.Ed. Yes!

I thought I'd share my list of duties at school for this year. You never know, we might have a lot to share and talk about- just in case you also happen to have been assigned to teach Year 6 for the first time ever in your teaching career, giving you cramps and nightmares and panicky moments even at the start of the year. Or etc. Here we go:

Teacher Mayah's 2013 List of Duties at SKST

Pentadbiran (School Management)
-Penyelaras SPLG/LDP (Sistem Pengurusan Latihan Guru/Latihan Dalam Perkhidmatan)

Hal Ehwal Murid (Students' Affairs)
-Penyelaras Unit 3 K (Kesihatan, Keceriaan dan Keselamatan)
-Penolong Setiausaha Unit Kecemerlangan
-Ketua Biro Motivasi dan Kepimpinan bagi Unit Kecemerlanagan
-Guru Kelas Tahun 4

Kurikulum
-Penyelaras Bilik SAL (Self Access Learning Centre)
-Guru Bahasa Inggeris bagi Tahun 3 (KSSR), 4 dan 6 (KBSR)

Ko-kurikulum
-Penyelaras Persatuan Bahasa Inggeris
-Guru Penasihat Bola Baling (uh-huh)
-Guru Penasihat Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah (what??)

That is as far as I remember. I'll come back and edit if I've left anything out. What's on your list for this year? Do share.Sumaiyyahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00350156046641699550noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3364265967877212447.post-56328331818990782502012-12-29T02:23:00.000+08:002012-12-29T02:23:19.596+08:00New (School) Year Countdown: Weird Dreams I have always found it odd how when I'm looking forward to or am constantly thinking of something, it ends up in my dreams. Of course it's probably not odd since studies have shown that dreams are usually affected by what you think and do (eceh jadik saintis pulak tetiba). You know what I mean though.

And guess what. School is about to start in less than a week.

And last night, I had the strangest dream.

I dreamt that I was getting ready for school. Then I realised that I was late for school. I quickly jumped on my bike (what the... a bike?) and pedalled as hard as I could. Then suddenly the tires went flat. I cycled home (apparently I was supposed to pick her up. Wait. Where did I cycle from in the first place??) and informed her that we had better go to school by car since my bike had managed to get flat tires. Then a man suddenly came and knocked on the window and asked if we were planning to move out since he was looking for a house to rent.

I don't think we went to school at all in the end.

Complete rubbish.

As if I would EVER cycle to school. Crazy kot. Mungkinla jauh.

Hehe. Happy end-of-holidays and let's get ready to get back to school!

Anybody been lucky enough to get your own share of weird get-back-to-school dream/nightmare?
Don't be! Because the big bad wolf is just one of the millions of bad, fictional character out there (okay, not the most comforting thought). But best of all, the Big Bad Wolf I am referring to is not the furry beast that hunts Little Red Riding Hood. Instead, I am talking about this Big Bad Wolf:
Yup, yup, yup! It's a Book Sale! I have been looking forward to this ever since my sister told me about this. Books, books, books, where would we be without books? One of my ideas of meeting and falling in love with somebody is in a book store. Haha. I always think that a person who carries a book around as the most interesting sort of person I'd like to talk to. Unfortunately, people who are immersed in reading aren't usually interested in talking! I should know. Anyway, people who bury their head in books are so much better than those who bury their heads in tablets or Ipads and the like. I think.

So save the dates! I will be going to KL next week, and I CANNOT wait to visit the Big Bad Wolf and give him a huge hug. Hopefully he'll hug me back and let me return home with plenty of goodies. For more information, visit their official website or/and blog and don't forget to like them on Facebook.
Assalamualaikum and hello everybody! I know I have been very unproductive, both on this blog and on my baking blog. The thing is, once I stop posting, it's a little bit difficult to get back on track.

However, I recently turned 24 (Happy Birthday to me, yayyy!!), on November 24th to be exact, and I thought I might as well set a few goals. One of them is to post at least once a week (my hands are trembling slightly at the thought as I type this). Ahhem. Can I do even that? But I must! After all, the purpose of this blog is to share as much knowledge as I can. If I don't post anything, I might as well just put the blog to sleep.

What a year I have had! From getting the posting results on January 10th, to getting briefed on the 16th, and going to school on the 17th, all the way up to this moment. I have had a lot of good moments, some bad ones from which I've learnt a lot of things and some very unforgettable and funny ones, mostly involving my pupils of course. You will doubtless have read about 2 Delima and their main star, Haslina. As of this moment, I have been appointed to teach them again next year. The horror! (gasps) Haha.

But it's all in good fun. I have learnt so much from just being with them. They, in turn, have improved so much. As the term ended, I noticed how much more thoughtful they have become. I too, have learnt a little bit on how to manage them without having to shout all the time. They've settled to the idea of working first before playing. They still insist on playing, I'm afraid, but I suppose it can't be helped.

Haslina, though, is a different story. If I'm to teach them next year, I pray that Allah grants me a lot of strength and patience. She is a bright girl, and I am sure she can even be clever if she tries, but I'm afraid she doesn't get much discipline at home. I've learned that what happens at home will have a huge impact on how children behave at school. We do what we can at school, of course, but that's it. It's 1 teacher : 60 pupils vs. 2 parents : 5-10 children. You get the idea. Maybe I don't understand because I am not yet a parent. I don't know. I just think parents have to put in more effort in bringing their kids up. It's not just about feeding and clothing them. It's about helping them to become people.

And those are my thoughts for today. I hope you're having a great time. Make sure you try to do something fun during the school holidays. Go on a trip, write a book, or several, or a poem. Eat nice things. Keep healthy. Be productive. And never, ever forget to do your ibadah.

School is finally over!!!!

For this year, at least.

I've had so much fun, and learnt so much that my brain feels like it can't take anymore. Which is not true, of course, as the more you learn, the better it is for your brain. Anyway, I'd like to catch up with my writing on this blog, but for now I'll just wish Happy Holidays to everyone. Happy Holidays! Have a well-earned rest for those who will also be on holiday. Let's hope we'll do better next year, Insya-Allah. Take care!
I am late as usual. Nevertheless, I'd like to wish all my Muslim friends and readers Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri! Maaf zahir dan batin. He's now in Year Four and is a prefect! He looks so cute, I wonder if his voice is as shrill as always. I do miss him. There's nobody quite as dear as he is, I've yet to find a pupil I like so as much as I liked him (biasness alert).
For now, take a look at these pictures to have some insight into what we did there...

We got some really great ideas on how to teach phonics:
Okay I may be a bit biased here so feel free to disagree. I simply think that English teachers are just the best sorts of people to be around. Even when I was in school, I always felt that vibe from my English teachers. They were just different. They were fun, creative, full of energy and I always looked forward to my English classes. I had the same sort of experience during the two courses I've attended which involved English teachers. Things were never boring because everybody was just so enthusiastic. I met so many lovely people there and I feel truly privileged.
It explains the types of models used for assessing pupils together with some examples. The post actually explains SBOA for secondary school, but I haven't found any links for primary school. Check out the post anyway, I think it's still helpful.
My own assessments are a bit of a mess, but as soon as I clear them up I'll try to share them with you (ughhh I hate making promises these days, I just ever get around to fulfilling them!)
Sumaiyyahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00350156046641699550noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3364265967877212447.post-87258663143971260152012-07-22T19:09:00.003+08:002017-01-28T15:03:17.956+08:00Delima Diaries: Struck by a Pen Being with 2 Delima is always a challenge. I never know what to expect, no matter how carefully I have planned a lesson.

Last week something rather funny and more truthfully painful (for me, anyway) happened. The bell signalling the end of my two periods with 2D had rung, and I was sitting by Mat Syaf and observing while he finished his work. He was rather quiet that day due to his own actions and I felt rather sorry for him.

Meanwhile, Haslina and the other three girls were, as usual clamoring around me and fighting over who was going to take teacher's things up to the staff room. Haslina had taken possession of my stationery box and was going over the things in it and tidying them up (a habit she had taken up recently). She was standing (or sitting, I can't quite remember) right beside me and was engaged in trying to get the lid of a red pen off the bottom end. It was rather tight and she struggled with it for a few seconds when suddenly it came off and wham! struck into one corner of my left eyebrow. I was quite shocked by the sudden unplanned 'attack' and the sharp pain led me to give out a cry of pain.

I immediately pressed my palm over the wound and put my head on the desk. My head was reeling a bit from the shock and it was honestly quite painful. The girls were crowding around me and trying to get a look at my face. When my head had stopped spinning I lifted my face and gingerly touched the area where I'd been hit. Horrors! There was blood! I had no tissue on me so I made do with the inside part of my headscarf.

The news spread like wildfire among the children. Quite a while later, when I'd had a chance to sit down and relax, I discovered the wild stories that the children had spread, like how I had got into a fight with Haslina which ended in me being viciously attacked by Haslina with a pen. It turned out to be a rather funny incident and I couldn't help but laugh about it.

Haslina herself was quite unaffected by it. I suppose she is still too small(?) to know how to feel guilty, because while I was washing the blood off my face (okay, don't worry, I didn't lose that much blood, haha), she innocently spoke one of her favourite sentences, "Teacher, I only brought RM 1 to school today..."

Who knew teaching eight-year-olds could be such a dangerous occupation?

p.s. I made sure to tell everybody that it was an accident, because it certainly was. Haslina may be problematic sometimes but an accident is an accident.Sumaiyyahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00350156046641699550noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3364265967877212447.post-23864396136839504492012-07-17T11:35:00.000+08:002012-07-17T11:36:28.697+08:00Delima Diaries : Of Pencils My pupils eat pencils. Figuratively, of course. Since the start of the year, I've gone through at least 7 boxes of pencils. Most of them never bring pencils to class, and if they do, they'd lose them in five minutes. They don't seem to have an appreciation for their own things. If they lose something, it's either borrowing from somebody else or simply buying a new one. And then losing it all over again.

That's how 2 Delima is. In fact, that's just a tiny piece of what defines 2 Delima.

My pencils either go missing. The ones that come back are either broken into two or three pieces, or are whole but with the leads inside broken, or split into two, etc. Some of them even look as if they'd been chewed on.

You may say, why pamper these children? I should be strict and insist that they bring their own pencils. Well, I've tried and it doesn't work. I'm just not at the level where good teachers are yet. I feel that what's important is that pupils are able to do their work, and if it means I should bring pencils, then I will.

A month ago, I stumbled upon twelve boxes of pencils sold at around RM 12.00 (less, I think). In exasperation, I bought the whole lot. 12 boxes times 12 pencil equals to 144 pencils. That should last at least three months, I thought.

I'm happy to report that after two weeks, I've only has to use and am still only using one box of pencils. All twelve pencils from that box are still in good condition. None is missing. Only one has a broken lead but it's still usable.

I guess 2 Delima has grown up a bit. Maybe I'm getting better. I don't know. What I do know is that in this profession, you should never, ever give up. Never. Ever. Your children need you. You need them too.

Sometimes you just cannot take it anymore. Why must people always look down on you? Why must people always have something bad to say about what you do? Can't they just focus on their own work and leave you alone to do yours?

Sometimes you feel like giving up on human beings. Why can't they be nice to you when you've been nice to them? Why? Why?

The thing is...
Some were lucky to be sent to school in their own hometowns, while some have to brave their first school in a completely new environment. Whatever happens, remember our purpose in this profession. Remember!

Note 2: It's the...... (drum rolls....) school ho-ho-holidays! While I love being at school, I have managed to maintain that part of myself that simply loves the word 'holidays'. As I write this, I must painfully remember that there are only about 9 days of this blissfulness to go. There is so much to do, even during the holidays. Yet I am luckier than many, many of my friends have to be on duty, for some reason or other (mostly due to tuition classes) at school.

Note 3: Weddings. So many invitations. I managed to attend one so far, and I've had a blast. I'm happy for 4 of my Cohort 4 Pretties who got married. May Allah bless your life and shower it with blessings and happiness in the years to come. Insya-Allah!

Note 4: I need a new laptop. I need a camera. I need a new phone. I'd love a new stand-mixer. I already look forward to my next gaji (oh dear, I never thought I'd finally come to this phase). I have too many blogs that need updating. There you go. Happy holidays.

(Why must I always make sentences that confuse people?)

So far, this year has been a blast. I got my posting, started work as a teacher and also discovered that there is so much that I don't know about being a teacher. Every little thing that happens in school is a reminder that I must never stop learning, and that being a teacher does not mean I have stopped being a student. My goal is to help everybody around me, especially my pupils, learn something that will help them to become a better person than they are now. My ultimate goal in teaching is to gain Allah's pleasure.

There is so much that I'd like to share with you. I'd like to tell you how much better 2D has become... how much happier and more confident i feel now when stepping into a class. But for now, I'd just like to wish all my teachers and lecturers and even Mum, Dad and my family members who have taught me so much about life.

Happy Teacher's Day! May Allah bless you :)Sumaiyyahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00350156046641699550noreply@blogger.com1
